Playing Chicken at the Edge of the Fiscal Cliff

I’ve seen movies in which two guys charge their cars at each other to see who chickens out first and swerves. I’ve never actually known whether anyone is stupid enough to play such a game in real life. Watching our political leaders play with the Fiscal Cliff, I now realize I have been overly optimistic about human intelligence.

This political gamesmanship is so juvenile!

In Israel and Gaza right now we see another kind of gamesmanship and it is even more deadly. One doesn’t have to be a pacifist to see how very little we humans have learned over our history. We’re still like schoolboys resorting to trying to beat each other up because we just can’t think of any way to protect our pride and get our way. Now, however, we do not risk a black eye but nuclear destruction.

There are still people trying to call the bluff of the whole planet, dismissing talk about climate change, ecological stewardship, and earthkeeping. They are sure the earth will be an unlimited resource for us forever. Such denial is simply childish.

We must be such a deep disappointment to our Creator! Forgive us, Lord, and call us again to humility and gratitude and faith. Protect us from ourselves and restore us to the godliness for which you created us.
