In Minnesota in recent weeks, there have been three very sad events. First, a pair of teens were shot and killed while breaking into a house to commit a petty robbery, apparently to gain money to buy drugs. They were popular, happy, seemingly normal kids who made some stupid choices. The home owner who shot them did more than just protect himself and his property: he shot them each several times, finally making sure they were dead by shooting each of them in the head.
Second, a four year old boy found his father’s loaded pistol under his dad’s pillow and began playing with the gun, including pulling the trigger. His two year old brother was in the path of the bullet and died instantly.
And last night a fellow shot an intruder, who turned out to be no intruder at all but his own granddaughter, returning home (she lives with her grandparents). Grandpa mistakenly thought the girl was already home and in bed. The 16 year old girl is unconscious and in critical condition but is expected to live.
Perhaps someone can refresh my memory a bit. I can’t seem to recall the reasons why some folk argue we’d all be safer if every homeowner were armed and ready to shoot intruders.
