A Blanket of Snow

A fresh blanket of snow turns everything to a pure white, creating a world even Walt Disney couldn’t imagine had he not seen one. Our lawns are not green but white. And so are the plants that remain during the winter. Trees are outlined in white, making even a leafless tree look magical.

Maybe the best part of the snow is that is creates a special kind of quietness. Even cars passing in front of the house make only a deep, muted hum.

No, maybe the best part is the fire that’s inside the house. Central heating makes good sense and is effective and economical but it allows you no way to toast your backside. What a loss!

Yes, winter storms can be very damaging, as New England has discovered again these past few days, but for the most part, winter storms have a calming effect, a mellowing influence. Safe and secure within a warm home, it becomes very easy to say, Thank you, Lord, for all this luxury.

No, I was wrong: the best part of a winter storm is the hot chocolate to drink. Yes, I’m sure that’s the best.
