King of Kings and Lord of Lords

As our culture turns more and more against Christianity, there are certain ways in which the Lord is going to speak to people who don’t even know they are listening. One of those ways is through one of the most popular and oft-performed pieces of music in the world. I’ve just been watching YouTube videos of flash mobs around the country singing Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus.

Over and over, in thrilling musical joy, the words rang out: “King of Kings and Lord of Lords; He shall reign forever and ever and ever.” The music is simply irresistibly beautiful and moving. People may find our churches boring (if they bother to go at all) but they cannot evade hearing the gospel when it is expressed in music that grows more popular year after year.

I long for the day when the churches of America pursue excellence in all that they do, whether in establishing justice, sharing compassion, creating music, whatever is worthy of our time and effort and love. Then the gospel will again be heard as good news, glad tidings of great joy. May that day come soon!
