Is “Separation of Church and State” in the Constitution???

Can someone help me here? I’ve worked hard on the questions of religious freedom in America for many years and have studied numerous Supreme Court cases about the matter. But I’m still too dense to find a doctrine of “separation of church and state” in the Constitution or its Amendments. On what basis do we say the Constitution teaches such a separation? And what does that separation mean? Is it absolute?
