Congress Moves Beyond the Bizarre to the Dangerous

A moment after posting my last blog, complaining about Boehner and the House being out of touch with reality, I read the news reports about 47 Republicans from the House writing a letter to Iranian leaders to tell them any deal established between Iran and our Executive Department would likely be nullified by our Congress.

It is bad enough that the Republicans have so badly neglected their responsibilities in providing positive leadership for American internal affairs. This move — like that of inviting Netanyahu to address the House — is just another way to oppose Obama. This difference is that they are now trying to meddle in extremely serious international affairs. Is there no limit to how much harm they are willing to do to America — and now the world — just to spite Obama?

Such people have no right to be in positions of leadership in America. They are irresponsible, blinded by hate and prejudice, and increasingly dangerous. I am deeply shamed that the world must see such recklessness and pettiness in American leaders. How could we possibly expect the world to follow America’s lead in establishing democracies when we are so badly mangling matters ourselves. If we are the best a democracy can be, the world is in very, very bad trouble.

The health of American and our place in global leadership is not threatened as much by violent enemies as by our own inexcusable stupidity.
