The day after the Republicans won control of Congress last November, I made four predictions. Here they are again, with updated opinions in CAPS.
1. Moderate Republicans will exert a stronger force within their party than in the past few years. It is one thing to be on the outside complaining than on the inside feeling responsible for getting things done. America is going to be affected by this election but not as radically as some might hope, because even Republicans know that if they offend too many people, the blame will be entirely on their shoulders and there will be no one else on whom to lay it.
I WAS FOOLISH TO ABIDE BY THE NOW OBSOLETE OBSERVATION THAT RESPONSIBILITY BRINGS MODERATION. THE ABSURD AND BIZARRE ELEMENTS OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY ARE LOUDER THAN EVER. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, THEREFORE, IS EVEN MORE SHAMEFUL THAN BEFORE THE ELECTION . . .AND THAT’S HARD TO BELIEVE.
2. The trend, while not as radical as the Tea Party would like, will be toward greater problems for minorities. Racism is a major part of Republican thought and will influence decisions made by its leaders.
THE REPUBLICAN RESISTANCE TO BRINGING GREATER SENSE TO THE IMMIGRATION ISSUES IS STRONGER THAN EVER. THEIR RACISM IS LESS DISGUISED THAN EVER.
3.A second trend will be toward increasing the gap between the wealthy and the middle class. Though Reagan’s old theories about “trickle down” economics have been completely shattered by the experience of the last six years, the Republicans seem to persist in thinking that the people who created our recent economic disaster are the ones to save us.
WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE RISING AND FALLING OF THE NATIONAL DEBT SINCE 1980, IT IS CLEAR THAT THE REPUBLICANS FAVOR DECISIONS WHICH DRASTICALLY INCREASE OUR NATIONAL DEBT. I’M NOT TALKING THEORY HERE, JUST LOOKING AT THE ACTUAL NUMBERS. MOST DRAMATIC OF ALL THE REPUBLICAN IDEAS ABOUT FISCAL POLICY IS THAT THEY FAVOR THE WEALTHY OVER THE MIDDLE CLASS AND SO WE DO IN FACT HAVE AN EVER WIDENING AND ALWAYS DANGEROUS GULF BETWEEN THE WEALTHY AND THE MIDDLE CLASS. IT TAKES AMAZING GALL FOR THE REPUBLICANS TO TALK AS IF THEY ARE CONCERNED FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS. THAT IS NOWHERE NEAR THE TRUTH.
4. Hillary Clinton is a sure bet to be our next President. By November of 2016, the Republicans will have offended so many people that their chances of winning the White House will be very slim.
I WAS NAIVE IN THINKING IT WOULD TAKE UNTIL 2016 FOR THE REPUBLICANS TO SELF-DESTRUCT. THEY ARE FAR, FAR MORE FOOLISH THAN I HAD REALIZED. THEIR HATRED OF OBAMA SO BADLY OUTWEIGHS THEIR LOVE OF AMERICA THAT THEY ARE NOT JUST WILLING BUT EAGER TO SHRED EVEN THEIR OWN PARTY IN THEIR EFFORTS TO OPPOSE ALL THINGS OBAMA. THE LATEST EVENTS — INVITING NETANYAHU TO THE HOUSE AND 47 REPUBLICAN SENATORS TREASONOUSLY INTERFERING IN FOREIGN NEGOTIATIONS — BRING SHAME ON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, ON CONGRESS ITSELF, AND ON AMERICA. THEY ARE MAKING US LOOK LIKE FOOLS IN THE EYES OF THE REST OF THE WORLD. WHAT A TERRIBLE EXAMPLE OF DEMOCRACY WE HAVE BECOME BECAUSE OF THE CHILDISH REPUBLICANS.
IF AMERICA VOTES AGAIN IN 2016 FOR MORE THAN A TINY HANDFUL OF THESE FOOLS, WE WILL HAVE TO CONCLUDE WITH GREAT SADNESS THAT WE’VE GOTTEN OURSELVES THE ROTTEN LEADERS WE DESERVE. WHAT A SHAME.
