Not too long ago a professor from California took a poll which asked, among other things, about Obama’s religious beliefs. Among Republicans, 54% said he is Muslim. Republican leaders ought to be horrified that their followers are people of such massive and willful ignorance. Instead, they tend to nurture such foolish ideas because — I suppose — an ignorant population is easier to lead than a sensible and knowledgeable one.
On Fox News, Obama was mocked for quoting the Bible in one of his speeches. Why do they not mock conservatives when they do the same?
I find it absolutely amazing that Republican leaders have not actively and loudly opposed such nonsense. They are without excuse, just as they were in the closely related question of whether Obama is truly an American. They had no excuse for not knowing that a child of an American citizen is an American citizen, no matter where the birth. What is finally quelling the “birther” issues? Not common sense but an embarrassment: Tea Party folk have to reckon with the fact that their dear Ted Cruz was born in Canada.
Any party which engenders so much ignorance and foolishness needs to do a very, very great deal of self-examination.
