In the 1930s, worried that Germany would regain strength and aggressiveness after World War I, France built a huge concrete wall along its border with Germany. It was called the Maginot Line. Soldiers lived in the wall and were ready to use its outstanding weaponry to repel any attack from its enemy to the east.
Hitler walked around the end of the wall and conquered France in six weeks. The idea of a wall was good in ancient Roman Britain (Hadrian’s Wall) and good in ancient China (the Great Wall) but in the twentieth century it was just a very expensive comedy. Movement around the end of the wall is simply too easy these days.
Now comes the self-proclaimed genius, Trump, saying a 1900 mile wall will stop foreigners from entering our country via Mexico. It is a good thing Trump keeps reminding us how extremely intelligent he is. Otherwise, we’d never guess it.
