CNN reports that “States protesting the admission of refugees range from Alabama and Georgia, to Texas and Arizona, to Michigan and Illinois, to Maine and New Hampshire. Among these 26 states, all but one have Republican governors.”
Whether we note that 25 of the 26 governors opposing Syrian resettlement in their states are Republican, or we look at the map and notice the distribution of the states seeking to deny Syrian immigration, it is clear that compassion is not a Republican virtue.
It has been my observation over the years that one of the marks of mental illness is an excessive concern with security. It is, at the very least, a sign of deep insecurity.
