Back in the 80s I had a friend living in Central America. His observation after several years in the area was that Ronald Reagan was the best recruiter the Communists had in Central America. One of the main the reasons why Communism had an appeal in Latin America was that American capitalists had so abused Latin American workers.
By the 80s Reagan should have learned that lesson but in fact he had not. By simply labeling Communism as evil without giving a moment’s thought to the reasons why it was flourishing in that area, he proved profoundly irresponsible.
Now along comes Donald Trump, as completely lacking in the ability to understand anything as was Reagan. His thoughtless, knee-jerk reactions against Muslims accomplish only two things: First, they strengthen racism and religious bigotry in the US and, second, they “prove” to militant Muslims that America is the enemy. That’s why Al-Shabab (an al-Qaeda affiliate in eastern Africa) is showing clips of Trump in its recruiting videos, according to BBC Online, Jan. 2, 2015.
Strengthening our enemies and weakening the US — That’s what loud-mouthed brainlessness is doing these days. Sure, Trump is entertaining but it is a sorry reflection on our country that anyone is taking him seriously. Like Hitler before him, Trump is riding a wave of anger and even hatred. He hasn’t even the moral sensitivity to be ashamed of himself and that doubles his shame.
