Marco Rubio said two interesting things in an interview today with Fox’s Chris Matthews.
First, President Obama should not nominate anyone to fill Scalia’s seat on the Supreme Court because he is a lame duck president. “The president,” however, “can nominate whoever he wants but the Senate’s not going to act.” Once again, a Republican proves that the priority is opposing Obama, not serving America or honoring the Constitution. There are simply no measuring sticks by which we can grasp the extremity of Republican pettiness and hypocrisy.
Second, concerning the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage, Rubio says the Court actually has no right to make such a decision because marriage is a matter for the states, not the federal government. This shows a truly astounding lack of understanding about the nature of the American system. In the first place, the Supreme Court is not properly considered part of the government but is rather the watchdog over the government with just one question to ask: Does the law or presidential order contradict the US Constitution?
In the second place, Rubio and others who use such an argument seem entirely unaware of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. It read in part: “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
So enough of this nonsense about marriage being strictly a matter for the states to define. No state can infringe upon the rights of any US citizen. Period.
This whole argument simply shows once again that the Republican position is that America must undo the results of the Civil War. The Republican party is dominated by southern racism and ought to be feeling a very, very deep shame. . . but of course they lack the moral sensitivity to know how morally abhorrent their positions are.
Rubio, mouthing such irrational arguments, has proven himself to be just another political puppet, saying the empty words being fed him by the Far Right.
