The Pope has said that it is not Christian for a person to think only of building walls rather than bridges. It is hard to imagine a sensible way to disagree with him. No one who dwells in Scripture can doubt that Jesus was inclusive by nature and was exclusive only in relation to religious hypocrites.
Donald Trump has responded that it is disgraceful for the Pope or any religious leader to make such comments. Just as it is hard to find anything wrong with the Pope’s comment, it is hard to find anything right about Trump’s. It is simply absurd for someone to suggest that the Pope cannot identify that which is Christian and that which is not.
It is especially silly when the one condemning the Pope is a man like Donald Trump, whose “faith” is entirely hidden behind his ego. There is nothing whatsoever about Trump that would suggest he is a follower of Jesus Christ. every time he opens his mouth about faith he proves himself unacquainted with the subject.
When he spoke about “Two Corinthians” while at Liberty University, for example, his every word showed he was quite unfamiliar not only with the Bible but with the faith it teaches. Check it out on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1FgSiVKnhM
How clear must it be that this is sheer pandering? He is a complete fraud.
For me, a retired Protestant Pastor, the fact that any Christian would fail to recognize Trump’s hypocrisy is sad. Just as it would be sad for any Christian to fail to to recognize the Pope’s deep faith. When a man of Trump’s character dares to call Pope Francis disgraceful it is not sad but disgusting. Trump is a man of seemingly unlimited greed while Pope Francis has a lifetime of demonstrating selflessness.
