The campaigns are costing most of us a great deal of whatever respect we might have had for our process of electing a president.the republican process is especially painful to watch because it is almost certain that we are witnessing the self-destruction of the party. The party inadvertently created its own blonde (dyed, of course) monster by pandering to the thoughtless Tea Party folk. They let themselves become the party which treats the government as an antagonist.
It takes only a moment’s thought to realize how profoundly unAmerican such a view is. Whatever happened to “We the People”? Whatever happened to the conviction that we have a government which derives its power from the consent of the people? When one party will fight to ruin the government just because the majority of the people chose a president not of the party’s choosing, they demonstrate an incredible lack of understanding that “We the People” does not mean “We the Republicans.”
Among other signs that they do not even know how to manage their own party, let alone the whole nation, the Republicans have created a ridiculously useless way of choosing a nominee. Ted Cruz understands the system, however poorly designed it may be, and is clearly outsmarting Trump in lining up delegates in opposition to the Republican voters. Now Trump, who does not like having his lack of intelligence exposed, is whining abut the system and about the fact that the party itself is opposing him.
One of the many things Trump does not understand is that he is popular almost solely among people who just want to see a blind bully striking out at anybody and everybody. Thoughtful people recognize that Trump is totally unqualified to lead our nation. The kindest thing anyone can say about him is that he would be an incompetent president. In truth, he would a very great deal of harm to America and is already getting a good head start on doing just that.
Donald Trump is America’s Great Embarrassment. And it is only going to get worse.
