No one can honestly claim to like Trump because of his “positions” on the issues because he has no positions. He may speak one moment as if he has some position or another but he will soon change that position. He speaks only to the moment, never with forethought, always merely reactionary.
I think one of the biggest reasons people support Trump is the same reason children gather around a fight and cheer their favorite along: It is cathartic for people who feel weak, helpless, powerless. They love hearing Trump insult anybody and everybody who bothers him in some small way.
The sense of being powerless is a major theme in American culture these days. Sometimes it leads merely to insults, sometimes to mass killings, sometimes for buying a car that goes three times the speed limit, sometimes to cheering for the biggest bully, sometimes to suicide. Until we as a culture grow beyond our need for power and return to faith, love, and virtue, we will continue to be liable to people like Trump stirring up our worst inclinations.
