One of the questions being bantered around these days is, Under whose leadership would we be safer from international foes, Trump or Clinton?
Let me change that question a bit: Under whose administration would Putin feel safer? We Americans may feel sure that our nation will never be aggressive unless provoked or needed to protect masses of people. Does Putin have that confidence in us? No, he does not. Raised in the context of the Cold War, an officer in the KGB, Putin has always seen America as Russia’s single greatest enemy.
Now imagine Trump has just been elected. Putin considers Trump’s remarks during the campaign to have been truthful, including Trump’s claim to want to be unpredictable. What would you do in Putin’s shoes? You’d start putting more emphasis again on building military strength, wouldn’t you?
And suddenly we’d be back in the Cold War era and have a whole new arms race, with each side ready at a moment’s notice to launch a thousand nuclear missals at the other.
Is that what you would call a safe and secure world? Trump would have us at the brink of nuclear war again. Can any sane human being want an unstable, thoughtless, man like Trump making the decisions about if and when to use nuclear weapons? Is there any reason to suppose that the man who intimidates and bullies anyone who questions him would refrain from hurling nuclear weapons the way he now hurls cheap insults?
