It is actually a bit difficult to put the words “trump” and “policy” into the same sentence, since it is clear trump has no policies and does not seem to know what a policy is.
But there is something like a consistent perspective emerging from the murky shadows of trump’s rambling incoherence. We’ve all observed his odd admiration for tyrants such as Putin, Hitler, Kim Jong Un and Nixon. Now there is cause, eerie though it seems, to think that there is something more than admiration.
He frequently denigrates NATO, the world’s greatest point of resistance to Russia’s lust for a reborn empire. Now he even says he might not honor American commitments to defend our NATO allies if they are not paying enough for our help. Is that stupidity speaking or is trump in fact planning to grant Putin much more freedom to violate our allies?
Paul Manafort, his campaign manager, has a history of dealing with Putin’s friends, including having been on the payroll of the ousted Soviet-leaning president of Ukraine.
As trump himself is wont to say, there’s something going on here. Whether it is something sinister or just the incredible ignorance of trump, it is deeply alarming.
