I have a friend who’s a lot like trump: He always wants to dominate and tries a variety of manipulative tricks to get his way. Why do i call him a friend? Because his heart means well and, in fact, he does a great deal of good for a great many people. . . it just always has to be on his terms. So our mutual friends and I put up with a lot and never sucker for his manipulation.
One of the key differences between this friend and trump is that trump gives no sign that he is seeking to do anything good for anyone other than himself. He has a lifetime of stepping on people, using people, cheating people, breaking contracts and promises.
One young man, just getting to know my friend, was working with him on a project. My friend made some sort of deal with the young man, a deal which turned out well for my friend but not for the young man or for the project. When I learned of the deal — but before its outcome was known — I said to the young man, “Never, never, never make a deal with X because you will always, always, always lose.”
Methinks the poor President of Mexico now knows that any sort of cooperation with trump makes one a loser. The President tried to be cooperative and, in his presence, trump sounded cooperative. But trump immediately came back to the US and spoke as if he had somehow conquered Mexico, leaving the poor President looking like a terrible fool.
And a fool he was, because he didn’t seem to know the most fundamental rule abut dealing with people like trump: Never, never, never make a deal with him because you will always, always, always lose.
And methinks the Republican party is now wishing they had known that rule 18 months ago. They treated trump with kid gloves, assuming that even if he won the nomination (which seemed completely impossible) they would get the better of him and be able to control him. They surely now regret that they had neglected the rule: Never never, never make a deal with trump.
And some say trump actually has a chance of being elected. If that were to happen, it would mean the American people were making a deal with trump. And you know what happens to anyone who makes a deal with a man like that.
