Remember when Trump was having his childish squabble with the Gold Star Khan family? An interviewer pointed out to Trump what a sacrifice they had made for America. Trump responded with incredible insensitivity, saying something like “I’ve made big sacrifices, too. I’ve worked hard.” He revealed much of his own character at that moment, showing a total lack of comprehension of the meaning of sacrifice. He actually used his own unlimited greed as an example of his “sacrifices.”
I’ve thought of that interview several times in the last few days as I’ve contemplated Trump’s recent meetings with Angela Merkel, who has been a genuine profile in courage as she has led her country in the very costly sacrifice of allowing so many deeply needy refugees into Germany. Trump, working hard to keep America hard-hearted and selfish, stands beside her in a press conference and tells her — falsely — that Germany owes us lots of money. Instead, the very least we could be doing would be to send Germany a great many millions of dollars to help with refugee relief.
How disgustingly petty and false is this man! What a tiny, shriveled, cowardly spirit he has! I am so very ashamed to call him my president.
