Wanna’ hear something scary? If you like having the adrenaline rush of plain old fear, then listen to the report on Rachel Maddow, July 7, called “Russia makes inroads with American right via guns, religion.”
If you’ve been following my blog, you know that all my adult life I’ve considered myself to be an evangelical Christian. I’ve never been close to being a fundamentalist but I have always been devoted to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and have always had a deep trust in and respect for Bible as a key component of God’s self-revelation to us.
Nowadays, the word “evangelical” has been co-opted by the far right of the political spectrum, leaving me with no convenient label except “biblical follower of Jesus.” And that’s okay with me. Yet I still find myself wishing that the evangelicals were committed to being a biblical, Christ-honoring people. What they have become instead is self-righteous, convinced that they alone have all the right rules in ethics and all the right answers in theology.
During the last election I was very disappointed that the evangelicals had given up completely on valuing character in our leaders. It staggers my mind that someone claiming to love Jesus could cast a vote for someone as obviously marked by the spirit of the anti-Christ as Trump.
And now, according to Maddow’s report, things are getting even worse. Following Trump’s lead, evangelicals are beginning to respect Vladimir Putin and his gang of oligarchs.
In the spirit of the legalists with whom Jesus had such harsh clashes, today’s evangelicals are issue-oriented. If a Putin, however obviously evil and devious, agrees with them on specific issues such as abortion and gay rights, then his murderous character is overlooked by the evangelicals.
How very, very far they have wandered from Jesus Christ and from Scripture! How deeply they must be grieving the heart of the Lord!
