When Trump first let the world know he was tempted to run for president, several years ago, I wrote that I was proud to live in a land where anyone could dream of becoming president but ashamed that even one person in America would take seriously a man like Trump.
Now, five years later, I am more deeply ashamed than ever. It is utterly incomprehensible to me that anyone in America could be a Trump supporter. The man has no moral dimension to his character at all. That makes him completely untrustworthy and irresponsible. And he proves it very nearly every single day.
My deepest shame is reserved for my fellow Evangelicals, who have no excuse whatsoever for not valuing personal character. Trump is so much the opposite of Jesus Christ that anyone acquainted with Jesus should find Trump unbearable.
Yes, the Left is trying to suppress religion. Is that worse than the Right trying to politicize it? Neither side is honoring the Lord, directly or indirectly.
May the Lord raise up leaders in our churches who can speak the truth in love, with grace and integrity. The church and the world desperately need such men and women.
