Remember the old Bible story about David and Goliath? David was just a boy, too young and small to fight in a battle. Goliath was a huge man, a giant, fighting on the side of one of Israel’s enemies. The Israelites were terrified of Goliath but little David downed him with a stone flung from his sling.
Today we find ourselves in a similar situation. . .only we are the Goliath. We have the most powerful and sophisticated military forces in the history of the earth. No army dare challenge us, but a few guerillas are a severe challenge to us.
Their primary weapon is not brute force but terror spread among innocent civilians. One of the results of that terror is that people are fleeing the troubled lands, Syria in particular, by the thousands.
Europe and the US face the difficult question of what to do with these refugees. Most of Europe is receptive to sheltering them but in America many — especially among “conservatives” — are cowering in fear because there is a risk that the hordes of refugees may include some Davids.
I do not deny the risk but I do keep mumbling to myself the last words of the national anthem we sing so often:
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

With our history of immigrants building this nation, it really is un-American to refuse those fleeing war and tyranny.
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
That expresses the America I know. The statue of Liberty has no words about about refusing the homeless if it proves inconvenient or risky to shelter them.
